Ann's Family

Ann's Brothers David and Stephen

This picture of Ann, David and Stephen was taken at 150 Purdue, the home in Kensington California where the McMillans moved in 1950. This picture must have been taken soon after they moved here. Stephen was still a baby and David was around five.

David and Nora McMillan

David lives in Anacortes, Washington with his wife Nora. He works at Secret Harbor School on Cyprus Island teaching Shop. He loves working with at-risk boys and is very good at giving them the kinds of experiences they need to gain self-esteem and learn to be responsible. Nora is a nurse practitioner in women's health. She works for a primary care physician and at Island Hospital in Anacortes.

Dave & Nora's older son Emmett lives in Las Vegas, NV where he is studying veterinary medicine. He is with his wonderful friend Jennifer who is a top-line hairdresser. Dave and Nora's younger son Spencer is a student at Central Washington University. He comes home on weekends to work at his job as a job site manager for College Pro Painters.

David is a photographer like Ann and Stephen. You can find some of his photographs in his photo gallery.

Stephen McMillan

Both David and Ann are delighted that their brother Steve joined them in the Pacific Northwest. In January 2006 Steve moved to Bellingham, WA. Steve is a print maker and when he moved he brought his 1 ton press and all of his print making paraphernalia with him. He set up his new studio in his home in Bellingham. Steve's etchings are wonderfully complex naturalistic renderings of nature. Check out his web site for more information about his work. Steve met Carroll Ballard on Match.com a year ago and the two have been spending lots of time together. Dave and Ann heartily approve.

Edwin Mattison McMillan -- September 18, 2007 - September 7, 1991

Ann grew up in a unique home in Berkeley California. During her childhood she was surrounded by interesting people. Her father, Edwin McMillan, was a renowned physicist whose discovery of Neptunium and co-discovery of Plutonium earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1951. He was director of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at the University of California Berkeley and knew many of the prime movers of the nuclear physics world. Ann met many of these famous scientists and was influenced by their logical and probing minds.

Elsie Blumer McMillan -- May 15, 1913 - January 29, 1997

Ann's mother grew up in New England. Her father, George Blumer, was a doctor known for his diagnostic skills. He was in San Francisco during the 1907 earthquake but moved to Connecticut afterwards where he met and married Mabel Bradley. He eventually was promoted to Dean at Yale Medical School. George and Mabel had four daughters. Elsie was the second one. She was a vivaceous and lively girl who trained to be a teacher. At 19 she taught kindergarten and continued this profession until she married Edwin McMillan in 1940.

Elsie loved to entertain and frequently had parties. Like her two brothers David and Stephen, Ann loved these parties. The three of them would sneak down onto the stairs where they could sit and watch the goings on without being noticed.

Elsie was one of four sisters, the Blumer girls. In 2001 Ann and Arvin attended the reunion of the children of these four Blumer daughters. Many of the cousins were able to attend as well as one of the sisters, Peggy Biles and her husband Dick. As a result of this gathering, Ann pulled together some of the Blumer geneology materials and made a Blumer Home Page .
